The European Union has confirmed a phased rollout of its new Entry-Exit System (EES), with additional flexibility measures introduced to prevent bottlenecks at border crossings during peak summer travel periods.
What Is the Entry-Exit System?
The EU's Entry-Exit System (EES) is a new automated border management programme that will replace the current practice of manually stamping passports at Schengen zone borders. Instead, non-EU visitors' biometric data — including fingerprints and facial images — will be recorded digitally at the point of entry and exit.
The EES applies to all third-country nationals visiting the Schengen area, including citizens of the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Australia. The system is designed to enforce the 90/180-day rule more accurately and detect overstays.
The Phased Rollout
Following delays attributed to technical readiness concerns and infrastructure gaps at border crossing points, the European Commission has confirmed a staged implementation. Flexibility measures have been introduced to prevent congestion during the peak summer travel season, including extended manual processing lanes and a grace period for travellers unfamiliar with the new biometric procedures.
What This Means for UK Travellers
UK travellers visiting EU Schengen member states should be prepared for slightly extended border processing times, particularly at busy airports and ferry ports. Carrying all supporting travel documents — including proof of accommodation, return tickets, and sufficient funds — will speed up the process.
Crucially, the EES will make it significantly harder to inadvertently exceed the 90/180-day limit. Travellers who frequently visit Europe are advised to track their stays carefully to avoid inadvertent overstays which can result in entry bans.
