Schengen Visa Guide for UK Travellers Post-Brexit

Since Brexit, UK passport holders are no longer visa-exempt across the Schengen zone for extended stays. This comprehensive guide covers application requirements, processing times, supporting documents, and common pitfalls to avoid.

The Post-Brexit Reality

Since 1 January 2021, UK citizens are treated as third-country nationals when travelling to EU Schengen member states. While UK passport holders are still permitted to visit most Schengen countries without a visa for short stays, the 90/180-day rule now strictly applies: you may spend no more than 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen area in total.

For stays beyond 90 days — whether for tourism, business, study, or family visits — a long-stay visa or national permit from the relevant EU country is required.

Which Countries Are in the Schengen Zone?

The Schengen area currently comprises 27 European countries including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Portugal, and others. Note that Ireland and Cyprus are EU members but are not part of the Schengen zone.

Applying for a Schengen Visa

If your stay will exceed 90 days or your activities require it, you must apply for a Schengen visa from the consulate or visa application centre of your primary destination country. The application requires a completed form, valid passport, recent photo, travel insurance with minimum €30,000 coverage, proof of accommodation, return travel tickets, and proof of sufficient funds.

  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • Valid UK passport (6+ months validity)
  • Two recent passport photos
  • Travel medical insurance (min. €30,000 coverage)
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Bank statements showing sufficient funds
  • Cover letter explaining purpose and itinerary

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Applying to the wrong consulate, submitting incomplete documents, and underestimating processing times are the three most common errors. Schengen visa processing typically takes 15 calendar days, but can take up to 45 days in busy periods. Apply well in advance.
